Duties of The Head of State of Penang

The duties vary from official duties to ceremonial and community based duties historically preserved for the individual who wields the position as Head of State.

Official Duties

1. To officiate and dissolve the Penang State Legislative Assembly

2. To appoint the Chief Minister of Penang and the Executive Committee members

3. To announce new laws passed by the State Legislative Assembly

4. To approve retirement remuneration packages for State Officers and budgets allocated for civil service pension

5. To award the highly coveted Penang State distinguished medals of honour to the well-regarded recipients

6. To confer pardon to offenders who have shown sincere remorse and behaviour change
